Cryogenics

Creare space cryocoolerCreare is a leading innovator in the design and development of components and complete systems for long-life, low-power cryogenic cooling applications. Our expertise in miniature high-speed turbomachinery, heat exchangers, and Stirling cycle machines is applicable to refrigeration capacities of 1 mW to 20 kW at temperatures down to 4 K. We provide complete cryogenic services from conceptual design, analysis, and optimization to hardware development, fabrication, and testing.

With a clear understanding of the application priorities, Creare selects the appropriate technology and approach to achieve target efficiency, reliability, size, weight, and cost. System and component models are used to optimize performance at the design point and map performance at off-design operating conditions. Detailed design drawings are generated for prototype fabrication in Creare's precision machine shop or delivery to our clients. Fully instrumented prototypes are developed and tested at Creare to meet design performance specifications prior to delivery. Detailed technical reports and a configuration control system document hardware design, construction, and test results. Creare's engineering support extends through the installation of operating hardware and training of client staff in its use and maintenance.

Creare is currently developing components and systems for specialized cryogenic applications. These include high-speed turbines and compressors using gas and magnetic bearing systems. These machines, developed for industrial clients, NASA, the Department of Energy, and the Department of Defense, are characterized by their high efficiency and long life. Turbine rotor diameters range in size from 0.062 inch to 0.5 inch with useful refrigeration capacities from 1 W to 3 kW. Several innovative high-performance, all-metal, compact heat exchangers have also been produced. Specialized high-speed, motor-driven circulators and compressors complement these developments. These components are intended for high reliability, low maintenance, long-life cryocoolers for space sensors, superconducting magnets, and computer cooling.
