Aid to Launch
Successful launch of aircraft from a Navy carrier relies on
a steam-powered catapult. To achieve required catapult
performance, a very tight tolerance must be maintained in the thickness of a slot at the top of the launch cylinder.

Advances in Hearing Protection
At Creare, we’ve had the opportunity to work on a series of projects to improve hearing protection devices for use in extreme noise environments. Our approach has been to understand the mechanisms of sound conduction through the head and body, then design protective equipment based on our understanding of the conduction paths.

The Inside Perspective

The diversity of projects, clever colleagues, technical rigor, and informal atmosphere at Creare are all reminiscent of the best of graduate school years. Creare has a wide variety of engineering projects and there is a fantastic depth of excellent people with whom to team, comparable to faculty with expertise in many different engineering fields. And just as I was able to pursue topics I was most interested in during my graduate studies, at Creare I control which projects I work on.

A Chilling Technology
Creare engineers have developed a novel form of refrigeration that is lightweight, compact and can be used in virtually any environment—from the searing heat of deserts to the challenge of cooling in deep space—with minimal power requirements. The regenerable heat absorber (RHA) system stores the energy in chemical form (as concentrated lithium chloride (LiCl) salt solution) until it is needed to trigger refrigeration. This concept can also be used to advance lifesaving and health-enhancing technologies for a variety of applications.
