Envelop® Protective Covers
Under Navy funding, Creare has developed patented technology for preventing corrosion, especially in challenging maritime environments. Our Envelop® Protective Covers install like a common tarp but incorporate a unique composite structure, the layers of which act synergistically to condition the environment beneath the covering to protect valuable assets. The resulting protection from corrosion approaches that of specialized preservation systems with greater convenience and at far less cost.

Corrosion damage accelerated by the maritime environment is a tremendous problem, impacting equipment maintenance costs, availability, rework and repair, and reliability, with increased lifecycle costs for the U.S. Department of Defense estimated in the billions of dollars. Creare’s Envelop technology has very broad applicability, not only across all Navy platforms, but also in all branches of the Armed Services and beyond. Envelop Protective Covers have been successfully tested on many Navy ships and have been shown to mitigate corrosion so well that the payback period for a covering is typically less than two months. While protective covers design and testing have been aimed at solving some of the Navy’s most serious and vexing corrosion problems on the weather decks of its ships, the corrosion mitigation features inherent to Envelop Protective Covers find application in many other contexts such as force pre-positioning, protection of work in progress at construction sites and shipyards, the preservation of firearms and other sporting equipment, and the mothballing of aircraft, to name just a few applications.

| Creare originated the protective cover concept, then worked to carefully tailor the properties of the composite layers to achieve maximum performance. We refined our designs through a rigorous process of laboratory-scale tests, outdoor exposure to natural weather conditions at Creare, and finally installation of prototype coverings on Navy ships for extended testing at sea, where they delivered stunning performance under very harsh conditions. In 2002, Creare licensed the Envelop Protective Cover technology to a large manufacturing firm, which formed a new venture, Shield Technologies Corporation, to commercialize the product. Envelop covers are now installed on numerous Navy ships and new commercial products are expected soon.
