Reverse-Brayton Cryocoolers

A single stage turbo-Brayton cryocooler includes a centrifugal compressor, a recuperative heat exchanger, an expansion turbine, and thermal interfaces to the load and heat rejection devices. Components and thermal interfaces may be individually sized and matched to optimize overall cycle performance.

The cycle arrangement above is designed for a space application where cooling is needed at just a single temperature. In this configuration, a radiator would be used to reject heat from the compressor to space. However, multiple loads at common or differing temperatures can be accommodated by extended fluid lines or by using multiple stages of cooling. The cooler can also be interfaced to other cryocoolers for additional stages of cooling.
