Assembling the System

Systems are constructed of objects: components, instruments, and subsystems. The screen depicts a simple system consisting of gas and liquid inlets feeding pipes leading to a tee, followed by straight sections of pipe and an outlet. (This model replicates an actual instrument calibration facility at NASA.) All objects are placed by dragging and dropping icons on the screen. Handles on each object snap together to form the flow network. Components represent the physical system hardware (pipes, valves, condensers, etc.). Instruments are used to designate and display output values (e.g., temperatures, flow rates). Subsystems consist of one or more objects, grouped for manipulation as a single object.
